Healthy Chocolate: Myth or Reality?
Unwrapping the Sweet Truth About Cacao

Chocolate—just the word can make mouths water and cravings ignite. But is chocolate truly healthy? Or is that just a delicious myth we like to believe? If you’re a chocolate lover, this deep dive into cacao’s health benefits, backed by tradition, science, and a real-life chocolate maker’s insights, will change how you see your favorite treat forever.

The Origins of Cacao – A 10,000-Year Love Story

Cacao isn’t just a trendy superfood—it’s ancient medicine. Indigenous communities in Mesoamerica revered the cacao tree for its spiritual and healing properties. Known as “food of the gods,” cacao was used in sacred rituals, bartered as currency, and consumed as a bitter elixir mixed with chili, salt, and corn. It wasn’t until modern industrialization that cacao was transformed into sugary, processed chocolate bars.

Ancel Mitchell, a chocolate maker and educator based in Costa Rica, describes cacao as a “grandmother energy,” a wise old tree offering nourishment, balance, and emotional healing. Her cacao apprenticeships immerse people in this ancestral wisdom, teaching chocolate’s ceremonial and medicinal roots.

Cacao vs. Cocoa – Know the Real Difference

Not all chocolate is created equal. Most supermarket brands sell cocoa, a heavily processed version of cacao stripped of its natural fats and nutrients. In contrast, raw cacao—minimally processed and unroasted—retains its powerful health benefits, including:

  • Higher antioxidant levels
  • Natural mood boosters like serotonin and dopamine
  • Theobromine, a heart-healthy stimulant that increases blood flow
  • Essential minerals like magnesium, iron, and zinc
When choosing chocolate, look for 72% cacao or higher, with minimal ingredients and no dairy.

The Science of Healthy Chocolate

Research confirms what cacao lovers have known for centuries—chocolate can be a potent superfood when consumed in its purest form.

Health Benefits of Raw Cacao:

  • Boosts Brain Function: Improves memory, focus, and cognitive clarity through neuroprotective flavonoids.
  • Supports Gut Health: Stimulates digestive enzymes and supports bile production, especially when taken before meals.
  • Elevates Mood: Increases dopamine and anandamide (the “bliss” chemical), reducing anxiety and promoting happiness.
  • Improves Circulation: Opens the lungs and enhances oxygen flow, boosting performance and energy.
  • Reduces Inflammation: Rich in anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds.
When Chocolate Heals: Stories from a Costa Rican Cacao Farm

Ancel Mitchell’s cacao farm is more than a business—it’s a sanctuary of healing. Through her Cacao Apprenticeship Program, she guides participants through a full cacao cycle: from tree to bean to bar. She also incorporates Compassionate Inquiry, a trauma-informed therapeutic method developed by Gabor Maté, using cacao as a heart-opener and emotional ally.

Mitchell reminds us: “Cacao increases curiosity and lowers fear—an ideal combo for inner work, intimacy, and community connection.”

Mindful Consumption: When Chocolate Isn’t Ideal

While cacao offers a treasure trove of health benefits, it’s important to consume it mindfully. Avoid or limit cacao if:

  • You are newly pregnant (due to its uterine-relaxing effects)
  • You take blood pressure medication
  • You are on MAO-inhibitor antidepressants
  • You’re sensitive to caffeine or stimulants
Listen to your body and choose unprocessed, high-cacao content chocolate in small doses.

Chocolate isn’t just something we eat—it’s something we experience.

Can Chocolate Be Healthy? Absolutely—If You Choose the Right Kind

Meet Amanda Cuda

I know what it feels like to want answers, to want relief, and to want your body to finally feel like it’s working with you instead of against you.

My journey into holistic health did not begin as a business. It began as a personal mission.

Coming from a corporate background, I understand what it is like to drag yourself out of bed each morning and push through the day when your body feels like it’s falling apart. For years, I lived with fatigue, pain, emotional overwhelm, and a growing list of symptoms that affected every part of my life. I kept going because I thought I had to. But eventually, I realized something needed to change.

As I started looking for a different way forward, I discovered something that changed everything for me. The body is incredibly intelligent, and when we begin removing what is interfering and supporting it in a more natural way, real healing can begin.

That discovery led me into a whole new world of wellness.

When I was introduced to essential oils and essential oil-infused wellness tools, I began creating simple daily rituals that supported my body, eased emotional stress, and helped me reconnect with myself in a completely different way. Little by little, I started to feel more balanced, more energized, and more hopeful.
It was not an overnight transformation, but over time, everything began to shift. My pain eased. My energy returned. My hormones became more balanced. I felt more like myself again. I even fell in love with cooking, which is something I never thought I would say.

What began as a personal healing journey grew into a deeper calling.

Today, I am a certified Holistic Health Coach, author, podcaster, essential oils educator, and a practitioner in Raindrop Technique and Egyptian Emotional Clearing Technique. I am passionate about helping others reconnect with their body, reduce the toxic load in their life, and create a more natural, nourishing path to wellness.

I help women who are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and disconnected from their health discover simple, supportive rituals that bring more calm, clarity, and confidence into daily life. Through holistic wellness practices, plant-based living, essential oils, and emotional support tools, I guide women toward feeling more empowered in their bodies and more supported in their healing.

What I share is not just something I studied. It is something I have lived.

I know what it means to make hard changes. I know what it means to learn a new way of living. I know what it feels like to want your life back. And I also know how powerful it can be when you begin taking small, intentional steps that truly support your body and your well-being.

Whether I am supporting clients, hosting my podcast, teaching classes, or speaking to a room full of people, my heart is always the same. I want people to feel empowered. I want them to know they have options. I want them to feel supported, seen, and hopeful again.

Because when you feel nourished, supported, and connected to your body, everything changes.
